After winning the tender for the reconstruction of Cairo International Airport to meet the needs of an increasing number of passengers, Turkish company Limak Construction, one of the flagship companies of Limak Holding, has also secured a deal for the one of the largest ever water transportation projects undertaken by the Saudi Arabian government.
The contract for the reconstruction of Cairo airport is valued at $387 million, while the water project in Saudi Arabia is worth $189 million. The Cairo airport project is being financed by a loan from the World Bank, secured after the country went through turmoil during anti-government protests that ousted embattled leader Hosni Mubarak.
The project was originally intended to only double the capacity of the third terminal of the airport and to build additional facilities to serve passengers. However, expansion of the runway to accommodate larger passenger planes such as the Airbus 380 was also included in the project.
Member of the Limak executive board Harun İyidil told Today’s Zaman the project symbolizes the restoration of stability and trust in Egypt after a difficult period. "It will open the gates of Cairo to the world with significant contributions to the country’s economy,” he explained. İyidil also disclosed that his company and MNG Corp. signed an agreement with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) to build the Ras Al Azur-Hafar Al Batin Water Transmission project. "I hope this will pave the way for further deals between Turkey and Saudi Arabia,” he added. Limak has undertaken many projects both in Turkey and other countries over the past 35 years.
